Gross Metering

Under gross metering, all solar generation is exported and sold to the DISCOM at a fixed feed-in tariff, while you buy all consumption at retail rates on a separate meter. It suits generation-first installations rather than self-consumption.

Some states apply gross metering above certain capacities or for specific consumer categories. Because feed-in tariffs are usually below retail rates, self-consumption under net metering is generally more profitable for homes.
