Hotspot

A hotspot is a localised overheating point on a panel, usually caused by persistent shading, cell damage, or a failed solder joint forcing one cell to dissipate the string’s power as heat. Severe hotspots can crack glass or start fires.

Bypass diodes and half-cut architecture limit the risk, and thermography inspections catch hotspots early. Persistent partial shading (antennas, cables, pigeon nests) is the most common preventable cause on rooftops.
