DEHN — DEHNcombo DCB YPV SCI 1000 FM (900 066)

A combined Type 1 + Type 2 surge arrester for 1,000 V PV strings, with a built-in disconnect and remote fault contact — for use inside an enclosure, not out on the roof.

4.0of 5 · our score

Surge protective devices (SPDs) protect an inverter from voltage spikes caused by lightning and switching. The DEHNcombo DCB YPV SCI 1000 FM is a prewired, combined lightning-current (Type 1) and surge (Type 2) arrester for photovoltaic generator circuits up to 1,000 V DC. It includes a disconnection-and-short-circuit device with safe electrical isolation (DEHN’s “SCI” principle), a green/red status indicator and a floating remote-signalling contact.

The electrical data is clear: maximum PV voltage 1,000 V DC between the poles and 725 V to earth, nominal discharge current (8/20 µs) 15 kA, lightning impulse current (10/350 µs) 6.25 kA per path (12.5 kA total), voltage protection level 2.5 kV to earth and 4.75 kV between the poles, and a response time of 25 ns or less. Operating temperature is −40 °C to +80 °C.

The practical point for buyers: this is a DIN-rail device in a four-module red thermoplastic housing rated IP 20 and “indoor installation”. It belongs inside a DC distribution box or enclosure that provides the weather protection — it is not a roof-mounted part.

For Installers & Engineers

Deeper technical detail beyond the homeowner-facing summary above.

Type 1 + Type 2 combined means the device can handle partial lightning current (the 10/350 µs wave) as well as the smaller surges from nearby strikes. Whether a given rooftop needs Type 1 at all depends on the building’s lightning-protection design; ask your designer or DISCOM rather than assuming more is better.

It is specified for systems up to 1,000 V DC. For 1,500 V strings you need a different product; do not stretch this one. The short-circuit current rating is 1,000 A (the extended technical data lists 2.5 kA) — check it against the maximum string fault current of your array.

The voltage protection level (Up) is 2.5 kV from each pole to earth and 4.75 kV between the poles. Confirm that your inverter’s DC-input surge withstand is comfortably above these values; the datasheet cannot tell you that.

The floating changeover contact (rated 250 V a.c. / 0.5 A on the sheet, with lower d.c. ratings) lets a monitoring system or logger flag a tripped arrester — worth wiring up, because a protected-but-dead SPD gives false comfort.

The Scorecard

How we score

Standards & Safety Compliance

4.0

KEMA and UL approvals, a defined Type 1 + 2 classification and full discharge data are shown. The sheet does not cite the EN/IEC SPD standard by number and states nothing India-specific, so it stops short of the top band.

Build Quality & Durability

4.0

UL 94 V-0 housing and a −40 °C to +80 °C range suit hot enclosures; IP 20 means the surrounding box must do the weather protection.

Fit & Ease of Use

4.5

Prewired, four modules wide, DIN-rail mounted, with a visible state indicator and a remote contact — easy to fit and easy to check.

Documentation, Warranty & Support

3.5

Dense, clear electrical data, but no warranty, last-update date or India support route on the sheet.

Value for Money

Not assessed — we have not sourced a current India price.

Strengths

  • Combined Type 1 + Type 2 protection in one four-module DIN-rail device
  • Built-in disconnection and short-circuit device with a green/red state indicator
  • Floating remote-signalling contact so a failed arrester can be monitored
  • Wide −40 °C to +80 °C operating range with KEMA and UL approvals shown

Watch-outs

  • IP 20, indoor installation only — it needs a proper weatherproof DC box around it
  • Rated for up to 1,000 V DC; not for 1,500 V systems
  • The sheet cites approvals (KEMA, UL) but does not name the EN/IEC SPD standard it was tested to, and no India-specific approval is stated
  • No warranty or India service route is shown on the datasheet

Who It’s For

  • Installers fitting a DC combiner or DCDB for residential and small commercial strings up to 1,000 V
  • Designs with an external lightning-protection system or high exposure where a Type 1 + 2 device is specified
  • Buyers who want a monitorable SPD rather than a passive one

Our Verdict

A capable, monitorable Type 1 + 2 arrester for strings up to 1,000 V DC, with clear electrical data. Make sure it sits inside a weatherproof DC box, confirm your design actually calls for Type 1 + 2, check it against your inverter’s surge withstand, and wire the fault contact.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a surge protection device on my rooftop solar system?

Surge protection on the DC side is a standard part of good design, and DISCOM or design requirements may specify it. The type (1, 2 or 1 + 2) depends on lightning exposure and whether the building has an external lightning-protection system, so confirm with your designer.

Can this DEHN arrester be used outdoors?

Its datasheet gives IP 20 and “indoor installation”, so it must sit inside a weatherproof enclosure such as a DC distribution box.

Is it suitable for a 1,500 V solar system?

No. This model is specified for photovoltaic systems up to 1,000 V DC; 1,500 V strings need a product rated for that voltage.
