Inverters: String, Micro & Hybrid (and What Actually Fails)

Panels get the glory, but the inverter does the work — converting, tracking, synchronising, and protecting, every daylight second for decades. It is also the component most likely to fail first, which makes it the smartest place to spend attention (and warranty money).

What the Inverter Actually Does

Four jobs, continuously: convert the panels’ DC into 230/415 V AC; hunt the array’s maximum power point as clouds and temperature shift (MPPT); stay perfectly synchronised with the grid; and disconnect instantly when the grid fails, so it never energises a dead line (anti-islanding). Modern string inverters do all this at 97–98% efficiency.

It is also your window into the system: the inverter’s Wi-Fi/GSM module feeds the monitoring app that tells you, daily, whether you are getting the generation you paid for. Insist on app access in your own name at handover — not only the installer’s account.

String vs Micro vs Hybrid

A string inverter converts power for a series-wired group of panels centrally — the default choice for Indian homes and the right one for most unshaded roofs: cheapest per watt, simple to service, proven at every scale.

Microinverters convert at each panel, so one shaded or failed panel cannot drag the rest down, and monitoring is per-panel. They cost meaningfully more and are less common in India; they earn their premium on complex, partially-shaded roofs.

A hybrid inverter adds battery management: solar to loads first, surplus to battery or grid, and seamless backup in outages. It is the answer to "I want power in a power cut" — at the price of the inverter premium plus the battery bank.

Sizing: The DC/AC Ratio

Counter-intuitively, a correctly designed system has more panel capacity than inverter capacity. Panels rarely deliver nameplate power — heat, haze, and morning angles see to that — so designers oversize DC to 1.1–1.3× the inverter, filling it across more of the day. Mild midday "clipping" is usually profitable; ratios beyond ~1.4 start discarding real energy.

One Indian-specific wrinkle: DISCOMs generally sanction net-metering capacity by the inverter’s AC rating. Your inverter size, not panel total, is usually what the paperwork approves.

What Fails, and What Warranty Reality Looks Like

Panels are warranted for 25–30 years; inverters for 5–10. That gap is honest engineering: inverters contain power electronics working hard in Indian heat, and most systems will replace the inverter once in the plant’s life. Budget for it mentally — roughly 15–20% of system cost, sometime after year 8–12.

What kills inverters early is preventable: poor ventilation (installed in a sealed hot corner), surge damage from weak earthing and missing SPDs, and moisture ingress. The installation decisions around the inverter matter as much as the brand on the box.

Inverter checklist for any quotation:

  • Rated capacity and DC/AC ratio stated explicitly
  • MPPT count and voltage window (matters for shading and string design)
  • Warranty years and — critically — the service network in your city
  • Monitoring app included, with owner-level access
  • Installed location: shaded, ventilated, rain-protected
  • DCDB/ACDB with surge protection on both sides

Brand Strategy for Indian Buyers

The inverter market changes fast, so buy service reach rather than nameplates: a mid-tier brand with a genuine service centre in your city beats a premium import whose replacement takes six weeks by courier. Ask the vendor two questions — "who fixes this in year 6?" and "what is the replacement turnaround?" — and treat vague answers as pricing information.
