Amphenol — Amphe-PV H4 Plus cable connector

A second genuine connector family: UL 6703 and IEC 62852 listed at 1,500 V on its page, with current ratings by cable size — and a clear warning that H4 mates with H4, not MC4.

3.9of 5 · our score

Amphenol’s H4 Plus is a field-assembled PV connector with its own mating design, not an MC4. The product page lists certification to UL 6703 and IEC 62852 at 1,500 V DC by UL and TÜV, protection of IP68 when mated (1 m, 24 h) and IP2X touch-proof, contact resistance of 0.20 mΩ with the cold-formed RADSOK contact, a −40 °C to +85 °C range and a UL 94 V-0 shell.

Current ratings are given by cable size: under IEC 62852 at 85 °C, 25 A for 2.5 mm², 41 A for 4 mm², 45 A for 6 mm², and 55 A (stamped and formed) or 65 A (cold-formed) for 10 mm². UL 6703 ratings are listed by AWG, from 15 A (14 AWG) to 50 A (8 AWG). The connector takes cable from 5.0 to 8.7 mm outside diameter, is rated for 100 mating cycles and has an anti-backspin ratcheting back nut.

The compatibility statement is the important one: Amphenol says it mates reliably with its own PV product line. That is the same principle as Stäubli’s MC4 rule — connectors should be mated within one family — and a reminder that H4 and MC4 are different designs from different makers, whatever a seller calls them.

For Installers & Engineers

Deeper technical detail beyond the homeowner-facing summary above.

Ratings by cable size and by standard make comparison harder than a single number. Stäubli’s MC4-Evo ready datasheet states a single 30 A rating for its 4 and 6 mm² connector, while Amphenol lists 41 A and 45 A for the same cable sizes under IEC 62852 at 85 °C. The testing and derating bases differ, so do not rank connectors on those figures; check the certificate for the exact part number.

We saw another Amphenol H4-family listing that quotes IEC 62852 at 1,000 V rather than 1,500 V. The H4 Plus page lists 1,500 V for both standards, but connector families and variants differ — confirm the voltage on the certificate for the exact part and contact type you are buying.

Two contact types are mentioned (stamped-and-formed and cold-formed/RADSOK), with different 10 mm² current ratings, and the page does not explain crimping tools or procedures. A field-crimped connector is only as good as the crimp, so use the maker’s specified tool and process.

The page lists IP68 as 1 m for 24 hours, while Stäubli’s sheet gives 1 m for 1 hour. These are different test statements, so read each maker’s test conditions before comparing.

The Scorecard

How we score

Standards & Safety Compliance

4.0

UL 6703 and IEC 62852 are stated at 1,500 V with UL/TÜV certification, but other H4-family listings quote different voltages and no India approval is stated.

Build Quality & Durability

4.5

IP68, 0.20 mΩ contacts, UV-resistant shell and a locking ratchet nut are what a roof connector needs.

Fit & Ease of Use

3.5

Wide cable range and a locking nut help, but field crimping needs the right tool and the family can only be mated with itself.

Documentation, Warranty & Support

3.5

Detailed ratings by size and standard, but no warranty, tooling guidance or India distributor on the page.

Value for Money

Strengths

  • Listed to both UL 6703 and IEC 62852 at 1,500 V DC, certified by UL and TÜV (per the page)
  • Current ratings published by cable size and standard
  • IP68 mated, 0.20 mΩ contact resistance, UV-resistant shell, UL 94 V-0
  • Wide cable range (5.0–8.7 mm outside diameter); anti-backspin ratchet back nut

Watch-outs

  • Mates reliably only within Amphenol’s own PV line — do not mix with MC4-type connectors
  • Variants and contact types differ in rating; another H4-family listing quotes IEC 62852 at 1,000 V
  • Field assembly requires the correct crimp tool and process, which the page does not describe
  • No warranty or India distributor stated on the page

Who It’s For

  • Projects whose modules or inverters already use H4-style connectors and need genuine matched parts
  • Designers who need current ratings by cable size under both IEC and UL conventions
  • Buyers who want a documented alternative to MC4 and will keep the whole connection in one family

Our Verdict

A properly rated, certified alternative to MC4 whose main rule is the same: keep both halves in one family and from one maker. Check the certificate for your exact part number and voltage, and use the specified crimp tool.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I mate an Amphenol H4 connector with an MC4?

Amphenol states that the H4 Plus mates reliably with its own PV product line. Mixing connector families is a common source of poor contacts, so keep both halves of a joint within one family and from one maker.

What cable sizes does the H4 Plus take?

The page lists cable from 5.0 to 8.7 mm outside diameter, with current ratings given for 2.5, 4, 6 and 10 mm² (IEC 62852) and from 14 to 8 AWG (UL 6703).

Is the H4 Plus rated for 1,500 V?

The product page lists 1,500 V DC for both UL 6703 and IEC 62852, but other H4-family listings quote IEC 62852 at 1,000 V, so check the certificate for the exact part number.
