Growatt — SPH 5000TL BL-UP single-phase hybrid inverter

A 48 V-class hybrid with 97.5% efficiency and a 10 ms UPS function — whose datasheet lists 4,000 W of AC power for a model called “5000”.

3.6of 5 · our score

Growatt’s SPH 3000–6000TL BL-UP is a single-phase hybrid for lithium or lead-acid batteries on a 42–59 V port. The SPH 5000TL BL-UP lists a maximum recommended PV power of 9,500 W, two MPPT trackers with one string each, 120–550 V MPPT range, 97.5% maximum and 97.2% European efficiency, a UPS-class switch time under 10 ms, IP65 protection and a 27 kg wall-mounted unit.

The feature set includes smart load management through a dry contact, a scalable system configuration, a VPP (virtual power plant) interface, remote O&M, an RS485/CAN/USB interface set and optional RF, Wi-Fi or GPRS monitoring. Warranty is 5 years as standard with 10 years optional.

One thing needs a direct question to Growatt: for the 4000, 4600, 5000 and 6000 models the datasheet’s AC rows list “max. AC output power 4,000 W” and “rated apparent power 4,000 VA”, yet the rated output current row shows 22 A for the 5000 (about 5 kW at 230 V) and 27 A for the 6000. Whether the number in the model name is a regional AC limit, a PV/battery figure or a typo is not explained, so confirm the true grid-side AC rating in writing.

For Installers & Engineers

Deeper technical detail beyond the homeowner-facing summary above.

The inconsistency we flagged: at 230 V, 22 A is about 5,060 VA, but the same column states a 4,000 W / 4,000 VA maximum. The backup rows are consistent (4,000 W, 17.5 A). Until Growatt clarifies, do not assume the “5000” gets you 5 kW on the grid side.

PV input: 550 V maximum, 120 V start-up, MPPT 120–550 V with 370 V nominal, 13.5 A per tracker (16.9 A short-circuit), and one string per tracker. At 9,500 W recommended, it allows a generous DC oversize relative to a 4 kW AC rating.

Battery: 42–59 V, maximum 85 A charge/discharge. A footnote says continuous charging power can reach 4,000 W when strong PV is available, but only 3,000 W when charging from AC alone.

Backup switch time under 10 ms and a 4,000 W backup rating with 230 V output; the datasheet lists IEC 62040 (the UPS standard) among its compliances.

Nighttime power consumption is under 10 W (higher than Huawei’s 2.5 W), the operating range is −25 °C to +60 °C and the altitude limit is 2,000 m.

This is the datasheet’s European grid-code set (G98/G99, VDE-AR-N 4105, EN 50549, CEI 0-21 and others plus IEC 61727 and IEC 62116); no India-specific approval is shown.

The Scorecard

How we score

Conversion Efficiency

4.0

97.5% maximum, 97.2% European and ≥99.5% MPPT efficiency are good, slightly below the Sungrow and Huawei figures.

Reliability & Build

3.5

IP65, a wide protection list and UPS-class switchover are positive; the datasheet’s own AC power and current rows disagree and AFCI is not listed.

Monitoring & Software

3.5

RS485, CAN and USB are standard; RF/Wi-Fi/GPRS monitoring and the 10-year warranty are optional extras.

Service Network & Support

3.5

A stated 5-year warranty with a 10-year option is good, but no India service route or approval is shown.

Strengths

  • 97.5% maximum / 97.2% European efficiency and ≥99.5% MPPT efficiency
  • Under-10 ms UPS-class backup switchover; lithium or lead-acid on a 42–59 V, 85 A port
  • 9,500 W maximum recommended PV power and dry-contact smart load management
  • IP65; 5-year standard warranty with 10-year option

Watch-outs

  • The AC power rows (4,000 W) do not match the rated output current (22 A) for the “5000” model — get the true AC rating in writing
  • Wi-Fi/GPRS/RF monitoring is optional; AFCI is not listed
  • The datasheet lists European grid codes and no India-specific approval
  • Nighttime consumption under 10 W and a 2,000 m altitude limit

Who It’s For

  • Homes using a 48 V LFP or lead-acid battery that want a UPS-class switchover and a 10-year warranty option
  • Installers who will confirm the grid-side AC rating and India certificates with Growatt’s distributor
  • Systems that benefit from dry-contact load management

Our Verdict

A capable 48 V-class hybrid with a UPS-class switchover and a warranty option, held back by a datasheet whose AC rating contradicts itself for the “5000” model. Ask for the true grid-side AC rating, the India-market datasheet and certificates, and the warranty terms in writing.
