Solar Panel Types: Mono, PERC, TOPCon, Bifacial

Every solar quotation is a wall of jargon — Mono PERC, TOPCon, bifacial, half-cut, 550 Wp. The good news: the technology landscape simplifies to a few clear tiers, and picking well takes ten minutes of understanding, not an engineering degree.

The Family Tree in One Paragraph

All mainstream panels are crystalline silicon. The old split — monocrystalline (single crystal, black, efficient) versus polycrystalline (multi-crystal, blue, cheaper) — is settled: mono won, and poly is effectively obsolete for new Indian installations. Within mono, cell architecture has evolved through generations: PERC (the last decade’s workhorse), TOPCon (today’s mainstream successor), and HJT (the premium frontier). Layered on top are packaging choices that apply to any of them: half-cut cells and bifacial glass.

So when a quote says "550 Wp Mono PERC Half-Cut Bifacial", it is describing one panel through four independent lenses: wattage, crystal type, cell generation, and packaging.

The Three Cell Generations

Mono PERC adds a reflective layer behind the cell to catch escaping light, delivering 20–21.5% panel efficiency. It is proven, widely available, and still a sound purchase — the Maruti of Indian solar.

TOPCon adds a tunnel-oxide layer that lifts efficiency to 22–23%, degrades slower (warranties around 0.40%/year versus PERC’s 0.55%), and handles heat slightly better. With Indian manufacturers commissioning TOPCon lines at scale, the price gap over PERC has shrunk to a few paise per watt — making TOPCon the default recommendation for new purchases where available.

HJT reaches 23%+ with the best hot-weather behaviour of all, but supply in India is thin and premiums are real. It is the right answer mainly for severely space-constrained roofs.

Bifacial and Half-Cut: Packaging That Matters

Half-cut cells — every modern panel has them — halve each cell to cut resistive losses and, crucially, split the panel into two independent halves so a shadow on the bottom row does not collapse the whole panel. On real Indian roofs with tanks and parapets, this is genuine value.

Bifacial panels have glass on both faces and harvest reflected light from behind. The catch: the gain depends on mounting. Elevated structures over a light-coloured roof genuinely add 5–11%; flush mounting on a tin shed adds almost nothing. If a vendor prices bifacial as premium, ask what rear-side gain the design actually delivers on your roof.

Reading the Datasheet Like a Pro

Four datasheet numbers decide real-world value more than the brand name:

  • Efficiency (20%+ is table stakes; 22%+ is current-generation) — decides roof area needed
  • Temperature coefficient (closer to zero is better; −0.30%/°C beats −0.40%) — decides hot-afternoon losses
  • Degradation warranty (year-1 cap and per-year rate; 0.40–0.55%/yr typical) — decides year-25 output
  • Product vs performance warranty (12 yr product / 25–30 yr performance is the current norm)

The Non-Negotiables for Indian Buyers

Whatever the technology, three checks are mandatory. First, the exact model (not just the brand) must appear on the current ALMM list — required for any subsidised system and a sound quality floor even without subsidy. Second, for PM Surya Ghar subsidy, panels must be DCR — both cell and module made in India. Third, the BIS registration number should be printed on the module label.

Technology tier is a preference; these three are law and eligibility. A dazzling imported TOPCon panel that is not ALMM-listed will cost you the entire ₹78,000 subsidy.

Which solar panel is best for home use in India in 2026?
For most homes: an ALMM-listed, DCR-compliant TOPCon module from an established manufacturer, typically 540–575 Wp. Mono PERC remains a sound, slightly cheaper alternative. Poly is obsolete.
Are bifacial panels worth the extra cost?
Only when mounted to exploit them — elevated structures over reflective surfaces yield 5–11% extra. Flush-mounted on sheet roofs, the rear face adds little and the premium is wasted.
Do higher-wattage panels mean better technology?
Not by itself — wattage scales with physical size. A 550 Wp and a 440 Wp panel can use identical cells. Compare efficiency and warranty, not sticker wattage.
